Constanza Gemstones
✦ The earliest known depictions of the crucifixion include the Constanza gemstones (shown above) and the Alexamenos Graffito. These depictions show Jesus tied to a T-shaped cross, without the use of nails. ✦ The Constanza gemstones are at the British Museum in London. In the bloodstone intaglio on the left and the carnelian intaglio on the right, Jesus’ hands do not appear to be nailed to the cross. His hands are below the cross beams and fall naturally as if tied at the wrists. On the back of the bloodstone intaglio is a Greek inscription, “Son, Father, Jesus Christ.” The carnelian intaglio includes six small, cloaked figures on either side representing the twelve apostles. Across the top is a Greek inscription, “Jesus Christ Son of God Savior.” The gemstones are roughly dated from 150 CE to 350 CE. |
